How do i replace the column shifter on my 98 Dodge Ram?

I need to replace the shifter on my dodge ram; but im unsure of how to dissasemble the column without messing anything up; anyone have any tips? I was told that I need to unhook the battery to avoid setting off the airbag is this true?

You can borrow a factory repair manual from the library. It will walk you through step by step disassembly and reassembly. Read the entire section on the job before starting so you know if you are capable of the repair, or if you have all the tools necessary, etc.
