I have a 1995 Jeep cherokee displaying the check engine light. When checking the problem codes I get a 41 which is the alternator field. My mechanic checked it out, alternator is good, battery is good but the alternator is not charging the battery. He says it might be the Power Control Unit but cannot find it!!!!! He checked with a certified Jeep mechanic for the exact location and apparently the PCM is "missing" on this vehicle!

That is impossible! The vehicle would not run without a PCM! It is known as the "powertrain control module", and it is located in the engine compartment next to the air cleaner. If he can't even find that, it is time to find a new mechanic!

Think simple. The alternator has to charge the battery. So the current from the alternator has to reach the battery by a wire. follow the POS wire from the battery and the wire(s) from the alternator. Where they meet should be your "PCM".
On the off chance, check your fuses in the power distribution center. One of the maxi fuses is for battery charging. |

Engine compartment, left front fender-well, beside the radiator shroud, headlight area, mounted near your air breather housing. It is made of almost the same kind of plastic and it is a black colored two piece PCM? Computer housing, mine has a vent hole on the outside and fairly large cluster of wires running to it.
It is there or someone has moved it inside the vehicle to go off-roading. I would get a Chilton's manual for the Jeep. Content provided by Yahoo Answers. |
