I'm really interested in getting a '97 Jeep Cherokee for $2,800 with 110,000 miles on it. I'm planning on getting it checked out by a mechanic though. So how good of a first car are Jeeps?

Would you consider them safe, reliable, and easy to drive?

they weren't good when they were new let alone with 110k on them and shouldn't even be considered as a second car if your looking for something reliable

They are safe and somewhat reliable. They are known for transfer case problems though, so make sure to have it checked out well before purchasing.

- here's a good website to look for real cheap quality car from government auctions!

I bought my car for just $1250 with a milage of 5,270!
And it's been already a year I'm riding my car and it's still doing well!

They are reasonably reliable and easy to drive, however, they are NOT very safe.
Look at them, reminds you of a thin metal box, correct?

If you want to go for it, always WEAR YOUR SEATBELT. More people die going through windshields and being ejected than being in an actual crash.

You sort of asked a particular question without all the information. What size is the engine? Has the vehicle been maintained? What is the age of the previous owner? How many owners? A younger owner typically does not service a vehicle properly do to inexperiance, lack of money, not being able to read(or ever reading) an owners manual. These are facts and not something made up.
110,000 is not that bad if the vehicle was used on the highway with factory size tires. It could be a lot if it was used offroad. Is it an automatic? If yes was the transmission fluid and filter changed properly? I have seen many vehicles where the customer had not done this until they are having problems and need a transmission.
I like a jeep and my wife wants one. I don't get one because her Saturn gets 33mpg, my Volvo gets 31mpg, and the Subura gets 35mpg. The F-250 gets 18mpg( I have driven it 30 miles in a year) and a good running Jeep Cherokee would get how much? How much will fuel be at the end of summer? Do you make enough that fuel prices don't matter?
If the jeep got 25 mpg and fuel gets to $2.50 a gallon--lets see: That is about 28.6 % less than the Suburu, 24.3% of the Saturn, and 19.4% of the Volvo.
10,000 miles;
Jeep--- $1000.00
Volvo--- $806.45
Saturn-- $757.58
Suburu-- $714.29
These are just estimates so a person can compare. If fuel prices are not a concern and a person can be responsible and nor roll a jeep over I would go for it.
