I am curious about the scene in the movie 'Bullitt'. Which is considered to be the better car overall-The Ford Mustang or the Dodge Charger?
Am I right in thinking the Ford is smaller and better handling, and the Dodge has more power? |

Neither was particularly good for the sort of chase shown in the movie. Both had plenty of horsepower and straight ahead speed, but braking and cornering were shaky at best.
Just about any European sports car of the day would've left both in the weeds. |

If you lived in that era you would have known that Chysler cars had quality control issues then. So Ford did not necessarily win races by being faster, but by default when Dodges and Chevys broke down.
Although, a big engined Mustang was somewhat nose heavy. On a tight slalom course I beat out a 390 Mustang with my better balanced 69 Torino GT convertible 351 - 2 barrel carb. A Dodge rolling over is no great loss. But it seems a shame watching some old movies of a Shelby Mustang crashing or going off a bridge in a fireball |

During the course of the movie Steve McQueen (and Bud Ekins) and the Mustang simply could not keep up with Charger. Charger was driven by professional stunt driver Phil Hickman (also named as Bill Hickman in second article). In response to this situation, the stunt driving team kept putting smaller and smaller tires on the Charger until the cars were more or less equal. Second article stated tires were "trimmed" down to allow Mustang to keep up.
Even so, this is a great, great chase scene. Note to all film makers, there is no musical score during this chase scene. NONE NEEDED!! We do not need music during every second of a movie. Listening to those two V-8s is music to any car enthusiast. |

There is so much B u l l s h i t spread around about 'movie cars' that it's hard to say which was the better car.
My personal pick would be the Mustang. Lighter and better handling than the Charger. I'm old enough to remember what both were like to drive when they were new cars and the Charger was just too heavy. I can tell you though, that if you were to give a restored model of either today you might have a problem getting them back. Content provided by Yahoo Answers. |
