some will say k&n air filter or cold air intake system, however on three separate vehicles i conducted controlled experiments using clean paper purolator filters vs. new k/n filters w/ cold air intakes and using a scan tool i found an average of 8 grams/sec MORE airflow from clean paper filter. plus k/n filters after cleaned need to be oiled and this may contaminate your mass airflow sensor.
however you may wish to replace stock airbox and intake ductwork with less restrictive components, install larger diameter mass airflow filter and throttle body, and if you are really motivated, remove upper and lower intake manifolds and machine the ports to match the opening size of the intake manifold gasket size. best results for porting intakes are obtained if you do NOT polish the inside, the rough surface creates vortices in the incoming air charge which allows better air/fuel mixutre and faster fuel vaporization. stay away from high flow exhaust, they kill low end torque. stay away from splitfire, bosch +4 or any other plug with multiple electrode endings, a spark will only find ONE path to ground each time it fires. stay away from aftermarket ignition wires. you may want to install a resistor in place of the intake air temperature sensor and use higher octane fuel for slightly more advanced ignition timing.

If you are trying to get more horsepower from a dodge Avenger, then take my advice, SELL IT! Get you a car that you can do something to. Like an 300zx, Supra, WRX, anything like that. Because you are only wasting your money, and if you stay with the Avenger, then later on down the road when you figure out that I was right, after you have spent a lot of money getting little to no horsepower, and you realize that you don't like the car anymore, because itis not fast enough, then you will realize.
