1998 Dodge Stratus, weird sound when driving?

Recently when I'm driving I hear this weird sound. It's hard to describe it's like that sound you hear when a bus opens it's doors (or like a kettle when its done steaming water) that sustains only when I'm driving that is when I break the sound goes away. Anyway can anyone tell me what it is and if it's safe to drive? I plan on going back home for the holidays tomorrow, but I don't know if it's safe (it's approximately a 200 mile journey).
